These illustrations come from my work-in-progress, SHADOWS. A mouse artist hops from dream to dream until he finds refuge inside a boy’s head. Lost in his art, he happily lives alone until he falls in love with a girl who lures him out of his solitary existence — only to have the dream turn into a nightmare when he discovers she was never real. Based loosely on the Offenbach’s opera, The Tales of Hoffmann.
Hopefully will be published sometime in 2028.
ONE LAST GASP showcases my 2026 cartoons from Cagle Cartoons. Also plan on publishing a book of my unpublished cartoon roughs.
Will be published in January 2027.
HAROLD’S SEARCH FOR MEANING or THE JOKE tells the tale of Harold Rigby, who dies never having discovered life’s meaning. Like a drowning man grasping for anything to hold on to, Harold in his final moments desperately seeks the questions of his existence answered. Harold is invisible to everyone except Mr. Death and his dog, Drago. The story is punctuated by a recurring, confusing memory of a strange joke. Is the meaning of life something that can be found in theology? Do we create our own meaning or is life itself absurd? Maybe that odd joke holds the answer to life’s mysteries?
Will be published upon my death (gives me something to look forward to).
Here are some preliminary sketches for my wordless children’s picture book, THE GREAT SQUID. The story centers on a lonely, bullied boy and his unlikely friendship with a giant squid. Might make it more cartoonish. Hope to publish it in the next few years.
Teaching art for roughly five years was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed, especially guiding young artists (old artists, not so much). In that period, I compiled approximately 300 pages of notes detailing my thoughts on art as well as worksheets, most focusing on color theory. Encouraged by former students, will release THOUGHTS ON ART in the summer of 2027. Much like Milan Kundera’s novel The Joke, a joke I told about a corrupt politician resulted in my dismissal from teaching. I’d like to teach again, but will likely need to start my own school.
RYAN’S SHADOW is the children’s story of a shadow that goes rogue, a theme previously explored by writers such as L. Frank Baum and J.M. Barrie. Please note, these are just preliminary sketches to outline the narrative. Struggling to decide if the main character should be a duck or a mouse, and if the style should be realistic or cartoonish.
THE CHRISTMAS MOUSE is a children’s story I’m developing centered on a mouse and a child discovering Christmas together. Not sure if I’ll ever finish it.
I intend to finish writing THE GREAT BEAR. An unexpected encounter leads to a friendship between a curious mouse and a large bear. These drawings are just preliminary sketches. The completed final version will be a cartoon style.
